When you’re heading for a U.S. visa interview, having the right paperwork ready can save you a lot of stress. From what I’ve seen and experienced, these are the essentials worth preparing:
- Passport – Make sure it’s valid for travel to the U.S. and doesn’t expire until at least six months after your planned return date (some countries are exempt from this).
- Previous U.S. visa – If you’ve had one before, bring the passport that contains it.
-
DS-160 confirmation page – This comes from the online nonimmigrant visa form you submitted.
-
Printed appointment confirmation and instructions – From the visa scheduling system.
-
Recent photo – One color photo (5 x 5 cm / 2 x 2 inches) taken in the past six months. I recommend checking the official photo guide to make sure it meets requirements.
-
Proof of Canadian legal status – A copy is fine, but originals are needed if you’re attending in person.
If you’re mailing your documents instead of showing up in person, include your current valid passport, your old passport with the last U.S. visa (if applicable), the DS-160 confirmation page, and copies of any other supporting documents.
For H (Temporary Worker) Visa Applicants
If you’re applying for an H-type visa, add these to your list:
-
Petition approval number from Form I-129 or I-797 (H1B1 applicants don’t need this).
-
Job offer letter and certified labor application – Required for H1B1 applicants only.
-
Visa issuance/reciprocity fee – This varies by nationality and visa type.
